NY Requires Driver’s License Numbers on E-Filed Tax Forms

By Jonathan Gold

On January 10, 2017, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, in an effort to combat tax-related identity theft, has reported that taxpayers will be required to provide driver’s license numbers along with their electronically filed tax returns.

Beginning with 2016 e-filed returns, individual taxpayers that have a driver’s license will be required to provide the following:

  • License/ID number
  • Issuing State
  • Issue Date
  • Expiration Date

Taxpayers who do not have a driver’s license, but have a State Issued ID, should provide the Document Number from their State Issued ID.

Failure to provide the above-referenced information could result in e-file rejection or a delay in refund processing. Taxpayers who do not have a driver’s license or State Issued ID do not need to provide any verification information.
